Product description
The traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Charles IV in 2026. The father of the Homeland is depicted in relief on the gold five ducat as a lover of tournaments.
Charles IV was the son of King John of Luxembourg, who was one of the true medieval knights. Following his example, he went through the heat of many battles – campaigns in Italy and Lithuania and the fateful battle of Crécy – and although he is often perceived as a peaceful man, he did not hesitate to raise his sword. He found exciting entertainment in knightly tournaments, but this pastime was not compatible with his position. Although he was criticized by the Pope himself, Charles was not deterred and participated under a false name and coat of arms. The tournament almost proved fatal for him – a blow to the chin caused devastating injuries, which he survived only by a miracle.
Medal maker MgA.Petra Čánská dedicated the obverse side of the five-ducat coin to an idealized depiction of Charles IV on horseback, clashing with another knight in the tournament arena. The monarch, wearing the Crown of St. Wenceslas, also dominates the reverse side, where he is accompanied by the imperial monogram, the double-tailed Czech lion, the double-headed imperial eagle and the inscription 5 DUKÁT. Both sides also feature rich Gothic decoration.
Only 100 pieces of the five-ducat gold coin were minted. Its specifications are inspired by the legendary St. Wenceslas ducats.
