Product description

The gold 3-ducat is issued in the year when we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the issue of the First Republic St. Wenceslas ducats. On that occasion, it received a brand new relief.

The St. Wenceslas ducats play an extraordinary role in the history of Czech coinage. In 2023, the Czech Mint added a new gold three-ducat to them.

The year was 1923, and Finance Minister Alois Rašín and his colleagues were thinking about how to celebrate Czechoslovakia's 5th birthday. They decided to revive the historical tradition of minting Czech gold coins, which dates back to the times of the rulers Jan Lucemburský and Charles IV, and thus the first republican St. Wenceslas ducats were born. Their authors were the renowned artists Jaroslav Benda and Otakar Španiel. Alois Rašín, who was assassinated, had the eye-catching design of the coin depicting the patron saint of the Czech lands brought to the hospital, but he did not live to see it minted... The St. Wenceslas ducats were the so-called business coins that served as a store of value, but people quickly grew to love them as a gift for important events - for a cradle, for graduation or even for a wedding. It was not just the ducats that were minted, with a mandatory specification of 3.49 g of gold of 986/1000 purity - multiples of these coins were also minted in the form of two-ducats, five-ducats and ten-ducats. The new ducats minted by the Czech Mint are in a similar vein.

The obverse side of the gold three-ducat, which is the work of the medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák, is dominated by Wenceslas in the form of a pious monarch and saint - with a princely cap and a halo. The texts on the obverse state SV. VÁCLAV – 3‑DUKÁT – SVĚTEC. The reverse side of the mintage is filled with a flaming eagle clutching St. Wenceslas sword in its talons. The composition of the reverse side is completed by the year 2023 and the text of the famous chant: “SAINT WENCESLAS, DO NOT LET US AND OUR DESCENDANTS PERISH.“

Each coinage is supplemented with a unique certificate covered with a layer of gold.
