Product description
The traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Charles IV in 2026. The father of the Homeland is depicted in relief on the gold 10-ducat as a lover of women.
Charles IV was married four times. These were dynastic marriages, but he also experienced true love. His first wife, Blanche of Valois, gave him two daughters. When she died, the king married Anne of the Palatinate, who bore him a long-awaited son, but the boy did not live to see his second birthday and was soon followed to the next world by his mother. His third wife, Anne of Schweidnitz, bore Charles another daughter and finally a male heir – the successor to the throne, Wenceslas IV. After Anna's death, the king married once more and fathered another son with Elizabeth of Pomerania, whose name went down in history – Sigismund of Luxembourg.
Medal maker MgA.Petra Čánská dedicated the obverse side of the ten-ducat to an idealized depiction of Charles IV, surrounded by all four of his wives and their coats of arms. The monarch, wearing the Crown of St. Wenceslas, also dominates the reverse side, where he is accompanied by the imperial monogram, the double-tailed Czech lion, the double-headed imperial eagle, and the inscription 10 DUKÁT. Both sides also feature rich Gothic decoration.
The gold coin, which weighs ten times the weight of a single ducat, has a mintage of only 100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the St. Wenceslas ducats of the First Republic.
