Coin commemorating 1150th anniversary of the arrival of the “Apostles to the Slavs“
In 2012, the Czech National Bank launched extraordinary issues of gold commemorative coins denominated 10,000 Czech crowns. The second coin is dedicated to the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of Christian missionaries Cyril (Constantine) and Methodius to the Great Moravia. The design for the coin was created by academic painter Vladimír Pavlica.
In 2013, the Czech and the Slovak nations commemorate the 1150th anniversary of Cyril and Methodius’ arrival to the Great Moravia. The learned brothers came to our territory in 863 from the faraway Constantinople to educate our nation and created for it the first Slavic alphabet and religious language – so-called Old Church Slavonic, the first Slavic literary language. The Slavs, population of the Great Moravia, accepted them as their teachers, and Saints Cyril and Methodius left a distinct mark in the Czech history.
The obverse side of the coin depicts prince Rostislav who invited the missionaries to Moravia. The prince‘s portrait is enclosed in a square with letters of the glagolitic alphabet, three heraldic animals and text in negative: “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA 10 000 Kč“.
The reverse side features the alphabet and the mint field in positive. The depiction of Cyril and Methodius is complemented with the glagolitic alphabet in central square – as if carved in stone and spreading all over.
The coin is delivered with a red catalogue card containing the description of the coin and its 3D depiction.
