The first purely investment coins minted in the Czech Republic were entitled "Czech Lion". They were issued with a foreign license by the Czech Mint. There are a number of options so that every investor can easily regulate how much money he or she will deposit. A gold half-ounce coin is a new issue for 2020.
When using the word ounce, the term needs to be further specified. There are a number of variants of this unit, some of them relate to weight and others to volume. The troy ounce (abbreviated as “oz”) is the universally valid unit of weight in the international trade with precious metals - especially gold, silver and platinum but also gems. Its name was derived from the French shopping center Troyes [trua] and used in the Middle Ages. One troy ounce weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams. Its multiples or shares are also commonly used to put a monetary value on metals - usually in US dollars per troy ounce. Every investor is interested in coin weighs in order to calculate the price, but the Czech Lions also have artistic and collecting value.
The Czech Mint reworked all variants of investment coins in 2020, but the main idea remained. In addition to the Czech lion in an untraditionally realistic depiction, the reverse side of the gold coin presents two more symbols of Czech statehood - the St Wenceslas crown on the head of a two-tailed beast, and an eagle on the shield, which is a synthesis of St. Wenceslas, Moravian and Silesian birds of prey. The relief was processed by the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS. The obverse side bears the attributes of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to mint its own coins. These are the portrait and the name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2020 and the nominal value of 25 DOLLARS (NZD). All this is supplemented by linden branches.
While the schedule of issuance of world investment coins amounts to millions of coins a year, the issuance of the quarter-ounce gold coins of the Czech Mint counts only 1,000 pieces (25 of them are a part of a comprehensive set of coins).
