Product description

The traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Ottokar II of Bohemia in 2023. The relief of the gold ducat commemorates his power and wealth.

The contemporaries of Ottokar II of Bohemia bestowed the monarch with the admiring name of "King of Iron and Gold". While the first part of the nickname, earned by the heavily clad knights, symbolised the king's strength, the second part expressed his wealth that came from the silver mines in the Jihlava region. The king's coins, which for the first time featured a two-tailed lion, inspired confidence in people at home and abroad. Unlike the heavily devalued denarii, which were deliberately reduced in silver content, they were truly pure. Today, they are called bracteates – according to the Latin word braktea, which means small metal plate. These pennies were very thin, so that they could not be deceived by the addition of another metal. The King of Bohemia made good use of his wealth. Not only to build the dreaded Iron Ride, but also to found royal towns, castles and monasteries - České Budějovice, Most, Bezděz, Špilberk, Zlatá Koruna and many others...

Medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák dedicated the obverse side of the ducat to the depiction of the king's coin, which is dominated by a two-tailed lion. In the inscription there is its name - BRAKTEÁT PŘEMYSLA OTAKARA II. The additional motif is a rosette from the Golden Crown Monastery. The reverse side, which is common to all four coins of the Ducat series, presents the King's relics. His skull, which was dissected in the battle on the Moravian Field, his funeral crown and the Latin inscription taken from this jewel - HIC SUNT OSSA OTACARI INCLITI REGIS BOHEMIE QUINTI (here are the bones of Ottokar, the famous fifth King of Bohemia).

The commemorative mintage of only 300 pieces respects the specifications defined by the famous St. Wenceslas ducats. The gold ducat is not only an addition to a collection, but also a traditional gift - for example, for a christening or a wedding.
