Traditional Ducat Series
The second Ducat series of the Czech Mint, which was created in 2022 for Slovak collectors and investors, tells the story of the historical aristocratic families in Slovakia. The Palffy dynasty is featured on a gold two-ducat.
The Palffy dynasty belonged to one of the younger noble families of Hungary. They came to power in the first half of the 16th century - at the beginning of the reign of the Habsburgs. Unlike other Hungarian families, they focused on the western part of the empire. They always supported the Habsburg throne until the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This loyalty secured them numerous positions and offices. Several members of the family even became palatine - or the second most powerful person in the country.
"Nicholas II. Pálffy de Erdőd (1552-1600) was a Hungarian politician who became famous as a defender in the fight against the Turks. His actions earned him the nickname of the Hero of Rab. He became captain of Bratislava Castle, county governor of Bratislava County and also a secret advisor to the king. In the background, behind the portrait, a horde of Turkish horsemen are charging, whom Nicholas defeated in numerous clashes, thus maintaining the power of the Hungarian crown," describes medal maker Mgr. Art. Miroslav Hric, Art.D., on the obverse side of the double ducat. The reverse side, which is common to all aristocratic ducats, presents a freely interpreted and stylized composition of the coats of arms of four noble families - the Andrassy, Palffy, Eszterhazy and Thurzo dynasties. "The heraldic elements used are not identical to contemporary emblems and only refer to their motifs," adds the author.
The gold mintage weighing two ducats is issued in a mintage of only 100 pieces and respects the specifications set by the first Republican St. Wenceslas ducats.
