Product description

The traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Ottokar II of Bohemia in 2023. The relief of the gold two-ducat commemorates the remarkable personality of the "King of Iron and Gold".

Ottokar II of Bohemia was the second-born and therefore "insignificant" son of King Wenceslas I. Originally he was destined for a career in the church, however, he was able to give way to his ambitions after the death of his older brother Vladislaus. He was ambitious and rebellious, as his father, against whom he rebelled, found out, but he was also extremely capable - a politician, diplomat and warrior. The Austrian nobility promoted him as their duke and he famously won battles with the Hungarians. At the height of his fame as the fifth king of the Přemyslid dynasty, he ruled the Czech and Austrian lands, Styria, Carinthia and Carniola. This mighty confederation extended to the Adriatic coast. However, the most powerful man in Central Europe dreamed in vain of the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. The electoral Electors did not want a truly powerful ruler. Ottokar's choleric nature and arrogance were also an obstacle, therefore, his rival Rudolf of Habsburg was preferred...

Medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák dedicated the obverse side of the double ducat to the half-figure of the king, whose image was inspired by the statue on the Powder Tower. The inscription gives the monarch's name and admiring alias - PŘEMYSL OTAKAR II., KRÁL ŽELEZNÝ A ZLATÝ. Additional motifs are Ottokar's heraldic animals and a rosette from the Golden Crown Monastery, which the king founded. The reverse side, which is common to all four coins of the Ducat series, presents the King's relics. His skull, which was dissected in the battle on the Moravian Field, his funeral crown and the Latin inscription taken from this jewel - HIC SUNT OSSA OTACARI INCLITI REGIS BOHEMIE QUINTI (here are the bones of Ottokar, the famous fifth King of Bohemia).

The gold mintage weighing two ducats is issued in a mintage of only 100 pieces and respects the specifications set by the legendary St. Wenceslas ducats.
