Product description

The Slovak commemorative coin proves that we do not have to travel to the other side of the planet to see unique natural beauties. The beauty of the Slovak Karst is mirrored in pure silver.

Although karst abounds in numerous beauties, the two words do not have a common basis. The word karst is of ancient origin, coming from the Mediterranean region and is derived from the word karra - or rock. This name is appropriate because karsts are a collection of formations that are formed from soluble rock - mainly limestone and dolomite. Classical karsts are native to southeastern Europe, but can be found elsewhere in the world. The Slovak Karst, which is connected to the Hungarian Aggtelec Karst in the south, is the largest such complex in Central Europe. The limestone plains of this national park are desolate on the surface and scarred by valleys and chasms. The real beauty, which is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, lies underground and is made up of thirteen hundred caves. These are full of inanimate wonders, but surprisingly they are also home to rare fauna.

The obverse side of the coin depicts stalagmites from Domica Cave, stalactites and karst straws from Gombasecká Cave and an aragonite crystal from Ochtinská Cave. The monumentality of the complex is expressed by a metaphor in the form of temple architecture. The relief is supplemented with the Slovak state emblem, the nominal value of 10 EURO and the inscription SLOVAKIA 2017. The reverse side of the coin is dominated by the stalactite formations of the Krásnohorská Cave, supplemented with rare cave animals - a spider called the shielded spider, a ratsnake called the curlew and a flying bat. The composition is closed by the inscription JASKYNE SLOVENSKÉHO KRASU – SVETOVÉ PRÍRODNÉ DEDIČSTVO (SLOVAK KARST CAVES - WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE). The author of the coin is the medal maker Branislav Ronai.

The coin was minted by the Slovak Mint Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
