Traditional Ducat Series

The second Ducat series of the Czech Mint, created in 2022 for Slovak collectors and investors, tells the story of the historical aristocratic families in Slovakia. The Thurzo family is featured on the gold ten-ducat.

The Thurzo dynasty belonged to one of the most important magnate families of Central Europe from the late 15th to the first third of the 17th century. During this period they held leading social and political positions in
Hungary. They owned profitable businesses, extensive lands and strategic castles. The most important member of the family, György Thurzó, who became the Palatine of Hungary - or the second most powerful man in the country - was a devout Protestant and the founder of the Slovak Lutheran Church.

"
György Thurzó (1567-1616) was a count, palatine and the chief count of Orava. Although he was one of the main defenders of the country against the expansion of the Turks, he has made his mark in history mainly by his resistance to Bocek's anti-Habsburg uprising, which was eventually suppressed. Behind the portrait is a reconstruction of Lietava Castle, where Juraj was born," describes the medal maker Mgr. Art. Miroslav Hric, Art.D., on the obverse side of the ten-ducat. The reverse side, which is common to all aristocratic ducat mintages, presents a freely interpreted and stylized composition of the coats of arms of four noble families - the Andrassy, Palffy, Eszterhazy and Thurzó dynasties. "The heraldic elements used are not identical to contemporary emblems and only refer to their motifs," adds the author.

The gold mintage, which weighs ten times the weight of a single ducat, was issued in an edition of only
100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the First Republic's St.Wenceslas Ducats.
