Product description

For every culture in the world, the birth of a child is a reason for celebration, and ours is no exception. There are many rituals associated with the celebration, including the giving of gifts to the newborn. Such a gift can take many forms, but a penny made of precious metal - such as this silver thaler from the Czech Mint, which can be engraved with a dedication has been the traditional gift since time immemorial. The talisman in the form of a coin was given to children in the families of noblemen, wealthy townsmen and poor peasants. The precious gift became the first investment in his or her future, which his or her parents cherished for him or her until adulthood.

The Jáchymov thaler was a silver coin that originated in the Czech Kingdom in 1520. The coin, which was famous for the extraordinary quality of the metal used, spread throughout Europe and its success prompted the minting of many imitations. The Bohemian tolar became, for example, the Dutch daler, which was used for payment in the American colonies, among other places. Another mangled Czech word gave rise to the famous dollar. In history, thalers were mainly used for commercial purposes, but they also played a representational role. Because of their beauty and, above all, their value, they became a proven gift given to babies so that they would not suffer privations in life. After World War II, the cradle penny was almost forgotten, but the Czech Mint decided to revive this tradition by minting its own silver thalers designed specifically for the occasion of the birth of a child. The beauty and value of the silver remained and an incalculable personal value was added in the form of an engraved dedication.

Medal maker Lenka Nebeská, DiS., dedicated the obverse side of the silver thaler to a sleeping baby held in the palms of his parents and the inscription TOLAR K NAROZENÍ DÍTĚTE. The reverse side is then reserved for engraving text that can take the form of a personal message, name, date of birth, ... - there are no limits to the imagination. The only limit is the size of the text.

Do not overlook the other variants of the baby birth penny - our 2023 offer includes two different precious metals, three different artistic motifs and special variants that can be engraved with a dedication. You can learn more about baby gifts on our thematic website:
