Product description
The 2-euro commemorative coin was minted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Dubcek.
Alexander Dubcek was one of the most famous Slovak politicians in Czechoslovak history. He became famous as a fighter against the totalitarian regime and became a symbol of freedom, democracy and social solidarity. He was one of the key figures of 1968, a year of political, social and economic change. However, efforts to democratise Czechoslovakia were thwarted by the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops. Alexander Dubček was immediately dismissed from top political circles and forced to give up public life. Although he lived for the next two decades under the constant surveillance of the State Security Service, he did not give up his ideals. He sent letters of protest to the state authorities and maintained contacts with foreign institutions and human rights activists. He became a key figure in the democratic changes that led to the fall of the communist regime in 1989.
The obverse side of the coin, which is the work of Slovak medal maker Branislav Ronai, is dominated by a portrait of Alexander Dubcek in profile, accompanied by his life years. The reverse side bears the typical relief common to all euro coins with a nominal value of 2 EURO.
The coin was minted by the Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
