Product description

The silver coin with a nominal value of 10 euro was minted in quality standard on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the elevation of Skalice to a free royal town.

The free royal towns
represented islands of democracy in the feudal society of Hungary. They had their own self-governing and legislative power and their inhabitants elected their own representatives. Skalica in western Slovakia was granted this privilege in 1372 by King Ludwig I. Since then, it could fortify itself with walls and was allowed to hold weekly and annual fairs. Other rulers were also generous to the town, therefore, it quickly became one of the largest in Slovakia. The local crafts developed steadily, especially the leatherwork and viticulture. It is not without interest that the theft of Skalica grapes was punished by death. Skalica cloth, which was one of the finest in the whole of Hungary, was sought after by the upper classes. The local spiritual life was also very lively - Skalica was famous for its unprecedented number of church buildings and it received a considerable number of post-Belarusian exiles from the Bohemian lands in the 17th century.

Medal maker
Mgr. Art. Peter Valach dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a view of the historic town surrounded by walls, only fragments of which have survived to this day. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the period coat of arms and the text SLOBODNÉ KRÁĽOVSKÉ MĚSTO SKALICA 1372. The ancient Rotunda of St. George, which dominates the obverse side of the coin, was part of the city fortifications. The building is surrounded by an excerpt from the Gothic charter by which King Albrecht I confirmed Skalica's privileges as a town in 1439. The relief is supplemneted with the nominal value of 10 EURO, the inscription SLOVENSKO 2022 and the Slovak national emblem.

The coin was minted by the Slovak Mint of
Mincovňa Kremnica and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
