Czech Lion 2022

A unique edition of the Czech Mint's bullion coin the Czech Lion (Český lev), which is minted from one kilogram of pure silver, is covered with precious stones and is issued in a mintage of only 50 pieces.

The sapphire and Czech garnets, which supplement the embossed relief, are cut in the shape of the precious stones of the St Wenceslas Crown. Their authenticity is verified by a certificate issued by the company Granát Turnov, which is an integral part of the coin.

Each coin is produced individually to order and the delivery time is therefore about 2 months.

A star shot out of the sky by a Ceylon hunter in love... This is the old legend about the origin of sapphire - a precious stone that is extremely hard, shiny, rare and valuable.

The dark blue “brother“ of the ruby represents the noblest of human ideals - truth, honesty, purity and fidelity, but also strength and wisdom. Therefore, it has ever had an irreplaceable place in engagement rings and royal crowns. Rare sapphires can also be found in Czech crown jewels - they are set in the royal apple and especially in the magnificent St. Wenceslas Crown.

This symbol of Czech statehood was made by Charles IV, who was not only a great ruler but also an avid collector of precious stones. For the crown, he managed to acquire the most exclusive and luxurious specimens - among them an exceptionally large blue stone, which is still one of the most beautiful and heaviest sapphires in the world.

Sapphires were known in ancient times - they provided Helen of Troy or King Solomon with mysterious power. Because they were found in the banks of streams, where nature itself ground them into the form of boulders, they were not heavily modified in the jewellery industry. One of the earliest art objects that demonstrably contains stones with a cut is the St. Wenceslas Crown from 1346. This was literally a jewellery breakthrough in the Middle Ages.

It is not without interest that the sapphires on the Czech crown probably originated in Sri Lanka, where the legend of their origin began..

The reverse side of the coin is dominated by a Czech lion in an unusually realistic rendering with the St. Wenceslas crown on its head. The obverse side presents an eagle on the shield, which is a synthesis of the St. Wenceslas, Moravian and Silesian bird of prey. The author of the relief is traditionally the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the island of Niue, their obverse side bears its necessary elements - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 80 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2022.

The luxurious wooden box will protect the coin while elegantly displaying it.
