Apostles

The infamous Judas Iscariot appears on the last silver medal of the Czech Mint from the twelve-part series called Apostles.

Judas Iscariot
was a respected apostle and trusted treasurer of his brethren in the faith. Jesus gave him the same care and showed the same love as he did to all his disciples. Judas was present at all of Jesus' sermons, witnessed his miracles, and was able to heal the sick or cast demons out of people through him alone. Yet he betrayed his master and his name became synonymous with a mean, faithless, unprincipled, and false man. Why did Judas hand Christ over to his enemies who crucified him? Christians have been trying to answer that for two thousand years. Perhaps he was seduced by mammon - after all, he received thirty silver coins for the kiss he gave Jesus. Perhaps his motive was patriotism - he may have been disappointed that the Son of God refused to use his supernatural powers against a hated Rome. Perhaps the devil himself had entered his heart. And perhaps he was part of Jesus' plan from the very beginning - for without Judas' betrayal, the Savior could not have fulfilled his destiny... Likewise, Judas' suicide may have been not only an expression of black conscience and despair, but also of devotion. Perhaps Judas hanged himself so that he could get to the other side as soon as possible and ask Jesus for forgiveness.

The reverse side of the medal, which is the work of medal maker
Lenka Nebeská, DiS., is dedicated to the betraying kiss with which Judas marked Jesus Christ. On the obverse side, the treacherous apostle is holding a purse full of coins - he is reflecting on his deed and a noose is hanging on the tree behind him.
