Product description

All students and graduates of Charles University, but also admirers of the legacy of Charles IV. will be pleased by the silver commemorative medal of the Czech Mint.

Charles IV.
was an enlightened ruler who was well aware of the importance of the educated nation and therefore provided his subjects with the first university education in the Czech lands. One of oldest universities in Europe - the oldest one situated north of Italy and east of Paris – has been respected internationally and its history is closely connected with the history of our homeland. It was closely linked to Master Jan Hus and his reform movement, the government of Rudolf II, who made Prague a metropolis of education, the anti-Habsburg opposition, which resulted in the Thirty Years War, the Spring of Nations, Slavic emancipation, the Establishment of independent Czechoslovakia and struggles against supremacy of totalitarian regimes in 20th century. The Charles University belongs to the 300 best universities in the world. Therefore, the silver commemorative medal will remind its graduates forever of how proud of their education they can be.

The relief of the medal was processed by two young medal makers
Daniel Antoni and Martin Pospíšil. The reverse side was dedicated to the university seal. Charles IV. kneels on it before St. Wenceslas, to whom he gives the memorandum of the university. On the sides there are the coats of arms of the King of Rome and Bohemia, and a gothic inscription SIGILLUM UNIVERSITATIS SCOLARIUM STUDY PRAGENSIS (the seal of the student community of Prague learning). The obverse side presents the crowned portrait of Charles IV. surrounded by a czech-latin inscription CHARLES UNIVERSITY - UNIVERSITAS CAROLINA. On the left there is the imperial monogram of Charles IV. On the right there is the initial K from the memorandum of the university. The decorative background of the obverse side follows the art design of the university seal.

In the offer of the Czech Mint you will also find a variant of the medal with dedication which can be engraved at your request.
