Product description

The ninth silver coin from the Milky Way collector's series is dedicated to the first woman in space - Valentina Tereshkova.

The Vostok 6 spacecraft piloted by Valentina Tereshkova took off on 16 June 1963, two years after Yuri Gagarin's triumphant voyage. The twenty-six-year-old Soviet woman of the people - a textile factory worker, but also an amateur parachutist - became only the twelfth person and the very first woman in space. Her flight lasted a total of 70 hours and 50 minutes. In less than three days, the astronaut circled the globe forty-eight times. With her in orbit was Vostok 5, which she passed within a distance of just five kilometres. After returning home, she became a role model for women around the world. She still holds the record for the youngest woman in space and the only woman on a solo space mission. Her other first is quite unusual - she gave birth to the first child of two astronauts and proved that the offspring was not affected by the parents' stay in space. The next Soviet woman did not go into space until 19 years later, and the first American woman even a year later…

The reverse side of the coin was dedicated by the medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., to a faithful portrait of a female Soviet cosmonaut in a spacesuit. In the background there is the Vostok 6 spacecraft, whose hull is flanked by the name of VALENTINA TERESHKOVA. The composition is supplemented with stylized space objects. The obverse side of the coin then humorously presents crop circles and a flying saucer, which illuminates the national emblem of the island of Niue. This, together with the year of issue 2024 and the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), is a necessary attribute of the foreign issuer of the coin - a Pacific island that provides the Czech Mint with a licence to mint its own commemorative coins.

You can save the coin dedicated to Valentina Tereshkova in a collector's album full of interesting facts about the conquerors of space and our home galaxy.
