Product description

The long-awaited gold ounce medal of the Czech Mint from Karel Zeman's author cycle called The History of Warfare is finally here. It is dedicated to magnificent battle of Kolin together with earl Leopold Daun.

It was written in 1757 when the seven-year war raged and the unarmed Prussian troops led by King Frederick II surrounded Prague. When Leopold Daun, an elite Austrian commander in the service of Maria Theresa pulled against him, Prussian decided to attack him in the direction of Kolin. However, he roughly underestimated the ability of his opponent. Daun's maneuvers were quick, and "old Fric" was just surprised to see the superior Theresian army perfectly prepared to fight in an ideal position. The Austrian cannonade launched a battle after lunch on June 18. Disciplined Prussians set off to attack and even despite heavy gunfire and rising losses, proceeded steadily to occupy the villages of Křečhoř and Chocenice. The Theresian positions were broken through by a mighty Prussian wedge, and even the arrival of imperial troops could not stop the frontal assault. Daun only happily avoided the total collapse of his forces when his cavalry made a critical counterstrike. The Austrian superiority was fully manifested at that moment. The Prussians made their first retreat in the history and withdrew from Bohemia.

The courage of the Austrian ride is immortalized on the reverse side of the commemorative medal. "The battle scene depicts the so-called Holobrads from Dragon's regiment of Prince de Ligne, as they tease with pubertal enthusiasm well-trained Prussian grenadiers. The determination of these young men encouraged other cavalry units to the attack, which contributed to the first defeat of Frederick II. Great, " says academic painter Karel Zeman, the author of the relief. The action scene on the reverse side is complemented by the Grand Cross of the Order of Maria Theresa - a honor that was established just on the day of the famous victory. The obverse side of the medal is then dominated by Leopold Daun himself on horseback.

Gold medal comes out in a mere 100 pieces, whose integral part is a special certificate of authenticity which contains the historical text and also the accompanying word of the author.
